As people are struggling to pay the bills, many of them are being forced to get rid of their pets. However, there are some food banks out there who are also giving out free pet food.
Some might say that you shouldn't have pets if you can't afford them, but what if you get into a bad rut? Something happens that you didn't expect causing you to fall behind on things. Would you give up your loved ones? Your kids? For many pet lovers, the pets are part of the family.
As this article describes, demand for free pet food samples has risen in this tough economy.

There are groups that help people with pet food and health care if they fall on tough times. Locally, we have at least one humane group that does so. Food banks for pets are a good idea and could possibly be combined with human ones since those are often the people who need the help. In many cases, dog food companies will donate damaged bags to causes just for the asking.
It will be interesting to see the effects of the economy on our pets in the coming months. Hopefully, this will turn around soon before shelters take too much an increase in capacity.
Our local group that socializes dogs has started food banks for dogs and information on feeding dogs well, but not expensively. Some of the premium dog foods it turns out are not worth the premium prices.
