Essentially, some dogs hump as a way of asserting themselves. Whatever the motivation, when humping is directed toward peoples' legs, or objects in the environment, the result is the same: embarrassment for the dog owner and any guests who happen to be present.

Thanks god that Toffee doesn't hump on legs but he does have a special small pillow that I let him use for this purpose
So now we can explain to our guests that the humping doesn't mean the dog is horny, but that he wants to assert himself?
When Lydia gets upset with me, she finds a blanket to hump. I've learned to drop whatever I'm doing and listen to her when I see it happening.
It's also interesting that females are also prone to mounting... I've always had female dogs but none of them have humped anything (that I'm aware of).
