Mini Bulldog

With all the "designer" dogs being bred, I'm never amazed when I learn of a new type of cross breed. I was recently introduced to an "exotic" breed referred to as a mini bulldog. In actuality, the dog is a cross between a Pug an an English Bulldog.

Generally, the dog looks mostly like a bulldog, but grows only to the size of a pug. In fact, mini Bulldogs offer all of the great features and attitude as its larger friends.

Although this is the first time I've seen this dog, and while most people I spoke to haven't seen one, according to some google searches, Miniature Bulldogs were developed in the 1980's. The goal was to improve the health and reduce the size of the full sized English Bulldog.

According to some of the sites, Miniature Bulldogs are an improved dog whose behavior, looks, and health are ideal for the Bulldog lover. They have the features of full size English Bulldogs. As in the full size, there are variations in Miniature features.

The Miniatures are very active and are loving, obedient, protective companions. They are loyal, people oriented and like to do things with you. Grooming is necessary once a week and they will do fine in a small yard.

However, this breed is not without controversy. According to http://www.minibulldogs.com/ , there is confusion in the industry whether the breed "is it just a smaller Bulldog, or is a “mix” English Bulldog/Pug, English Bulldog/French Bulldog. There is not a real answer to this question. Many breeders do both. But any breeder that says they will not tell what they are is not very reputable."

Add this to the list of dogs I'd like to own someday.

I think the recent craze in cross breeding dogs is interesting. I haven't quite flushed out how I completely feel about it, except to say that our experience with Rocco as a cross breed has been nothing but awesome. Maybe we just got lucky with a really amazing dog, but maybe it was something in that cross that made him exactly the way he is. I think so long as the breeders are responsible in their breeding, have good intentions (to minimize health problems, etc. in full breds) and know what they are doing, cross bred dogs should continue to be a good pet choice. However, I think pet owners need to be fully aware of and educated about both the breeds that make the cross in order to best care for the dogs.

P.S.~That mini bull dog is one cute puppy!!

It is cute so people will buy it at outrageous prices. But the pug has such serious problems with that pug nose and to compound it with the bulldog problems. I feel sorry for the dogs and the people who will have to deal with the health problems.

Actually Miniature Bulldogs are NOT a cross between any 2 breeds. They are pure bred English Bulldogs. Breeders take smaller English Bulldogs and breed them to get the minis. Then they trade out male and female minis and begin breeding those. I surely wouldn't purchase from anyone who sells a pug/bulldog mix as a mini, you would be getting ripped off. As far as the health problems go the mini tends to have fewer health problems than the standard because size and weight play a big part in some of their issues.

Interesting, though I wasn't able to come across any research that confirms that. Even the dog breed info site I use didn't list the mini bulldog as a purebred. I guess it's all up for interpretation.

You may be interested in an English Bulldog classifieds website. Mini bulldogs are great because the usually don't have the health problems.

The MBCOA does not condone the Mix Breeding of any combination of breeds to achieve a Miniature Bulldog. ALL Miniature Bulldog Club of America members breed 100% English Bulldogs that have been breed down in size. WE DO NOT mix Bulldogs with Pugs, Bulldogs with Boston Terriers, Bulldogs with French Bulldogs. These are considered Hybrid Miniature Bulldogs and not Original Miniature Bulldogs. While these puppies are cute and usually less expensive, they do not live up to the standard of the MBCOA.
just some info i found online at a mini bulldog breaders make sure you get the right puppy

The picture of that puppy is actually ours and is not a cross breed Mini Bulldog. All of our Mini Bulldogs are pure breed Bulldogs that have been bred down in size. Visit us online @ www.minibulldogs.com

My boss recently bought a mini bulldog. His is not a mix breed though. His bulldog is a true mini bulldog, in that the breeder has breeded down these bulldogs. Choosing the smaller of the dogs and breeding them. AKC's standard for bulldogs must weigh no less than 55 lbs. And these dogs range between 30-40 lbs. To learn more visit www.mbcoa.org (Miniature Bulldog Club Of America).

The AKC happens to set the standard for purebreed dogs and the AKC does not even recognize "Mini bulldogs". The only mini dogs the AKC does recognize is miniature bull terriers, miniature schnauzer, and Miniature Pinscher. The AKC does also not recognize bulldogs as being "under 55 pounds". They recognize a mature bitch at 40lbs and mature male at 50lbs. The AKC website clearly says under the bulldog breed description "Ranging in size from 40 to 50 pounds." There is also no proven information that "mini bulldogs have less health problems." Mini's are produced by breeding underweight and undersized (undesirable according to AKC standards, if you will) bulldogs together, thus, producing smaller or "mini" dogs. These dogs are cute and small, but they are not an AKC purebreed dog. They maybe considered a purebred bulldog, but one that is considered to be of undesirable size and characteristic. I'd recommend anyone who is considering one of these dogs to do their homework carefully.

Until AKC or FCI recognizes Mini Bulldogs as a breed on its own, there will be no set standards. You may read more about Mini Bulldogs here: http://europuppyblog.com/item/2008/10/miniature-bulldog-or-mini-english-bulldog

"Pabs" with regards to the AKC setting the standard, the research on this would show you a doberman is not born with cropped ears & has a full tail. How is it that a standard is set that requires surgery?? In addition AKC supports puppymills...this is not the type of standard we should all refer to. I did my research & bought a beautiful little boy from thebulldogexchange.com not a mix a full English Bulldog. Have A Merry Xmas.
