Still Another Reason to Hate PETA

Jan, over at the Poodle "and Dog" Blog just posted a story that give us another reason to hate PETA.

Recently they used a fake business name to place this bogus classified ad in Dog Fancy Magazine:

"Just bought a brand-new purebred puppy? Welcome him or her into your home with a free gift bag! Call us today at 1-866-xxx-xxxx to claim your bag and hear about our products."

Readers who called the number found that the “bag” in the offer was a body bag, given to them because by purchasing a purebred puppy they caused the death of a rescue dog.

First of all, this is illegal, deceptive advertising. Second, it's not the fault of someone buying a dog that other dogs are put into shelters. I understand the arguments for adopting, and that's fine, but at the same time, worry about cracking down on the puppy mills who are abusing the dogs. Worry about better educating people who get a dog about doing their homework, so that these people aren't bringing dogs back to the shelters.

I'm interested in hearing your opinions.

Matt, I think it was about as low as can be! When I first read about that, I was disgusted... not surprised, but disgusted. Just imagine a child calling and hearing that message.

I am in agreement that if you are looking for a new pet, look in shelters and rescues, yes, save a life. But the bottom line is that the blame for most of the companion animals in shelters today are puppy millers and irresponsible owners, put the blame where it belongs!

Tactics such that PETA employ give animal advocates a bad name when most of us just want the best for animals, not to use 'terrorist tactics' to get our point across.

Thanks for writing about this. It's had me angry since I read about it last week!

Peta hypocrisy yet again. at the Peta "no kill" shelters last yr, out of the thousands of animals surrendered by owners who thought their pets were getting a great chance at a forever home, only 17 percent were adopted out. most were put down almost immediately after intake.

the PETA are a terrorist group in my opinion i heard that they are protesting the use of leeches in hospitals which is being used to save lives and i've heard theyve been stealing dogs. yah puppy mills are bad from what ive heard about them but the PETA needs to stop doing stuff like this it's sick and it's against the law
